There is a particular disappointment that comes with walking through a brand new home and finding the windows are the worst-looking thing in it. Smears, cloudy patches, flecks of paint and sticker residue on glass that has never been used.
It is extremely common, and it is not a sign anybody did a bad job. Construction simply leaves things on glass that ordinary dirt does not.
What Actually Ends Up on New Glass
A building site puts a specific mix of material onto windows, and most of it arrives as a fine airborne spray that nobody notices at the time:
- Render and cement dust, which is alkaline and etches into glass if it is left long enough.
- Concrete and mortar splatter from the slab, paths and brickwork.
- Paint and primer overspray, usually in fine flecks across a whole pane.
- Silicone and sealant smears around the edges of the frame.
- Adhesive residue from the protective stickers and labels on new glazing.
It Does Not Behave Like Normal Dirt
Regular grime sits on top of glass and lifts off with water and the right technique. Construction residue bonds to the surface, and the longer it stays there the harder it becomes to remove. Render dust in particular reacts with moisture, so a few rain events make the problem worse rather than better.
This is why a normal maintenance clean will not fix a new build. It is a different job.
The Real Risk Is Scratching
This is the part worth understanding before anyone goes at it with a scraper. Dragging a blade across glass that still has grit sitting on it will pull that grit along the surface and leave permanent scratches.
Toughened glass carries an additional risk, because tiny particles can be left on the surface during manufacture. Scraping over them can drag them across the pane. Scratched glass cannot be polished out. It has to be replaced, and in a new home that is an expensive and slow conversation with the builder.
Removing construction residue safely is about softening and lifting it first, and using a blade only where it is appropriate and in the right direction. It is a technique thing, not a strength thing.
When to Book It
After the trades have finished and before your furniture arrives. That order matters. If the windows are done while painters or renderers are still on site, you will be paying for the job twice. If it is left until after you have moved in, the residue has had longer to bond and the interior access is harder.
Estates Still Under Construction
If you are in an estate where building is continuing around you, expect the first year to be different from every year after it. Dust from neighbouring sites travels a long way, and homes in Armstrong Creek, Waurn Ponds and Tarneit often need a shorter cleaning cycle until the surrounding blocks are finished.
